Remove the hex nut that connects the gas line to the pilot assembly.

You may also be operating the on off pilot knob incorrectly.
Gently pull the gas line out of the pilot assembly housing.
You can fix this easily by moving the thermocouple closer to the flame.
If it is not you can bend the thermocouple back into alignment with the pilot tube but only after allowing everything to cool.
This is also a likely cause if the pilot won t ignite at all.
Be sure everything has cooled down before realigning the thermocouple and pilot light.
Thankfully a dirty pilot tube is the easiest issue to fix.
Now gently pull out the gas line.
